The City’s parks inventory has grown. Here’s the newest location

Joining the list of more than 200 City parks, a new outdoor amenity in south Natomas is another recreational space Sacramento residents now can enjoy.

Operated by the City's Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Department, Fong Ranch Park (3701 Fong Ranch Road) includes many features such as a children's farm-themed playground, basketball court, group picnic area with a shade structure and an open turf area youth soccer field.

"YPCE is thrilled to add Fong Ranch Park to our extensive parks system, providing even more access to spaces the community can enjoy for years to come," Park Planning and Development Services Manager Jason Wiesemann said.

The nearly 4-acre community park was approved by City Council in 2021. Construction began in October 2022.

Fong Ranch Park is named after Fong Sik, the original owner of Fong Ranch, a 360-acre farm previously located on the park site and the surrounding area. The Fongs, a Chinese American family, purchased and farmed the land where they grew alfalfa, tomatoes, sugar beets and grain, mainly for canneries.

City staff and Mayor Pro Tem Karina Talamantes were joined by the Fong family last week for a ribbon cutting at the new park.

"We are proud to welcome another beautiful park to Natomas," said Talamantes, who represents the district. "With a play structure, basketball court, park seating, and open green space, this amenity will serve our students and families. Parks and open spaces improve mental and physical health and are a safe place for people to relax, gather, and play. The grand opening was a success with the Fong family and YPCE by our side."

"For more than a century, the Fong family and Fong Ranch have been an integral part of the history of the City of Sacramento, playing an important role in its agriculture, economy, culture, and education," said Dr. Kelley Kawano, great-granddaughter of Fong Sik. "We are so proud to honor the legacy of Fong Sik, the original owner of Fong Ranch, and his son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Margaret Fong, and to continue our family tradition of contributing to the community, with the opening of Fong Ranch Park."

The park also features a games area with table tennis and two cornhole games, concrete walkways, large shade and flowering trees and a 12-foot masonry wall along the north side.

Staff have additional construction projects underway at parks citywide including Granite Regional Park and Chorley Park playground renovations and the Mama Marks Park splash pad upgrades.
