Council launches Graduate Development Programme

Shetland Islands Council has this week launched a new Graduate Development Programme to recruit eight recent graduates to support a range of Council-led projects.

The programme offers an opportunity for graduates to work on a range of projects across the organisation, carrying out research and activities to support wider project teams. Graduates will be able to advance their career in local government, delivering public services in Shetland and contributing to the Council's objectives and vision set out in the corporate plan 'Our Ambition 2021-26'

Graduates will gain a wide range of experience and skills during the two-year skills development programme, supported by a mentor from the leadership team and the chance to gain on-the-job training and project management qualifications. After completion of the two-year programme, they will be supported to transfer into a suitable vacancy with the Council.

Anyone considering applying for one of these posts must have an Honours Degree or Post Graduate Degree, achieved within the last three years.

The closing date for applications is 09 June 2024, with interviews taking place in the week of 24 June 2024. Posts will start in September 2024.

Ingrid Smith, Executive Manager - Human Resources, said: "I am delighted that we are recruiting to a new Graduate Development Programme. This is a fantastic opportunity for eight new graduates to be closely involved in various projects across the Council and to start on a path as future leaders in our organisation."
