CASE NCSEA & SEI

On February 21, leadership from the Coalition of American Structural Engineers (CASE), the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) hosted a virtual joint town hall event to discuss how the three organizations are working together to fulfill the Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering (adopted 2019). The Town Hall gives the opportunity for members from each organization to gain insight into what the three organizations are currently working on and what they will be doing moving forward.

Stacy Bartoletti, CEO of Degenkolb Engineers, moderated the event. Don Scott and Jerry Hajjar of SEI discussed Climate Change and Impacts on Structural Design Standards. SEI has partnered with NOAA and other federal agencies to develop design loads for safe, reliable structures. Their committees have the overall goal to improve our nation's infrastructure by enhancing community resilience and protecting the individual.

Ryan Kersting represented NCSEA and welcomed Rose McClure as a guest panelist. They discussed DEI efforts within the structural engineering community. In June 2020, CASE, NCSEA, and SEI issues a Joint Call to Action to promote diversity within the profession and outline efforts by each organization to address progress. Kersting and McClure outlined the journey of Engagement and Equity in the organization. They shared the initiatives and resources available including papers on Inclusive Recruitment and Hiring, Retention, and Career Development.

CASE Chair, Bruce Burt, and Kristin Killgore, SELC, discussed SE licensure requirements. They gave an overview of those appointed in regulating each state's laws related to engineering, the advances for licensure to safeguard health, safety, and welfare of the public. Killgore covered the advances in computer-based testing and pass rates.

CAMEE & ASHRAE

In January, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Council of American Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (CAMEE).

The Coalition of American Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (CAMEE) represents mechanical/electrical engineering firms and is focused on enhancing business practices through education, risk management, advocacy, and connecting creative business solutions to common problems.

Initial focus area will be to leverage ASHRAE's technical leadership and CAMEE's business practices leadership as it relates to implementing decarbonization and energy efficiency policies and strategies.

The agreement serves to advance and promote the mutual interests of their respective members.
