Protection of national minorities in Romania: solid legal framework and funding but insecurity about language rights in the future

A solid legal and policy framework protects the rights of national minorities in Romania and the 20 recognised national minorities receive generous financial support for promoting and protecting their cultures and participate in political decision-making bodies.

However, a number of issues need to be addressed, such as the insecurity about the future implementation of the right to use minority languages, discrimination against Roma in education, and the need to investigate and sanction police misconduct against national minorities.

These are among the key findings of an Opinion on Romania released today by the Council of Europe's Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.
