Brownfield Redevelopment Designation

Hearing the term Brownfield can be unsettling, as most people associate it with properties that are contaminated or polluted and in need of cleanup. While some Brownfield sites are contaminated, many are not and contamination is not required to designate an area or property as a Brownfield.

A Brownfield designation is a common tool used in redevelopment because it creates access to additional funding resources. The designation includes any property where expansion, redevelopment or reuse is complicated by actual or perceived contamination and is generally considered helpful for the redevelopment of areas.

In Hollywood, the designation was most recently used when the City and CRA designated the Adams Street parcels in downtown as such.
