After winning a double world title in Bangkok last year, Tech United is also going for the maximum result at RoboCup 2023 in Bordeaux this year with their soccer robots and service robots. The tournament will take place from July 6 to 9 and can be followed in a variety of ways online. Watch the matches live, follow the results on social media and support our team from the Netherlands! Plus, get in the mood for next year when RoboCup 2024 comes to Eindhoven!

RoboCup is the largest competition in the field of robotics and AI in the world. The event was founded in 1996 with the vision that by 2050 robots would win from human players on the soccer field. However, the tournament primarily serves to use competition as a drive to encourage the development of technology in mechatronics, computer science, electronics and AI, among other fields. After each tournament, therefore, knowledge and progress is shared with all participants.

RoboCup 2023 will take place from July 4 to 9. The first two days are reserved for setup and preparations for the competitions. This will be followed by three days of challenges and competitions, concluding with the finals on Sunday, July 9.

The tournament consists of competitions for soccer robots, rescue robots and service robots, with each category in turn consisting of multiple leagues. Tech United competes with their soccer robots in the so-called Middle Size League, the most spectacular robot soccer, and with their service robot HERO in the @Home league.

Watch the matches live

The players are approximately eighty centimeters high, moving robots, specially made for soccer. They play matches of five against five, with a real soccer ball, in two halves of fifteen minutes, on an 18 x 12 meter field. They are programmed in advance, but once the whistle blows, they play soccer completely independently and people are just spectators. This year the team is going for their seventh world title since in existence.

All matches will be streamed live on Tech United's YouTube channel (also see the video on the left). By the way, you can always watch them afterwards or enjoy the summaries. Check the Tech United website for the results achieved throughout the event, and all other details on the tournament.

In addition, Tech United is participating in the @Home league with their service robot HERO. Within this league, the focus is on the development of robots that can provide service and assistance in home or care situations. With this, it is hoped to be able to keep elderly people at home longer in the future, for example. Again, the team is mainly a spectator during the matches. Should HERO take the win again this year, it will be Tech United's third world title in this competition.

RoboCup to Eindhoven

Next year, the RoboCup is coming to Eindhoven (July 17-21, 2024). Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the Indoor-Sportcentrum in Eindhoven to cheer on the robots. It is the second time Eindhoven is hosting; the World Cup was also in the Netherlands in 2013. Back then, Queen Maxima was one of the spectators.
