Deputy PM and Minister of Energy visits Kanchanaburi to drive RE100 city for foreign investment attraction

24 January 2023

The Deputy PM and Minister of Energy visited EGAT's Srinagarind Dam to follow up on the progress and potential of the development of Kanchanaburi to be a clean energy city following Lampang, aiming to attract foreign investors and respond to Carbon Neutrality.

On January 20, 2023, Mr. Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Mr. Kittikorn Lohsoonthorn, Chairman of the Energy Commission, and the entourage visited Srinagarind Dam to follow up on operations of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). On this occasion, Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, EGAT Governor, and executives welcomed the visitors and presented the potential and possibility to develop Kanchanaburi into a city with 100% renewable energy usage (RE100), at Srinagarind Dam, Si Sawat District, Kanchanaburi Province.

Mr. Supattanapong revealed that in addition to the feasibility study of Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) Project in Mae Moh to develop Lam Pang into a clean energy city in response to the national policy of Carbon Neutrality, Kanchanaburi Province is another potential area of clean energy due to its large hydropower sources, including Srinagarind Dam and Vajiralongkorn Dam and a plan to develop Hydro-floating Solar Hybrid Projects. Moreover, to enhance the security of the country's power system, EGAT has developed a Pumped Storage Hydropower Project to enable the RE100 initiative with 24-hour clean power generation.

"All related parties need to accelerate the project study by keeping abreast of global situations at a reasonable operation cost to make Lam Pang and Kanchnaburi a model of clean energy city, attract foreign investors, and expand the project to other areas in the future," Mr. Supattanapong finally concluded.
