Grover Beach Celebrates Groundbreaking of Cleaver & Clark Commons

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Grover Beach, as the City joined forces with People's Self-Help Housing and community partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of Cleaver & Clark Commons, a 53-unit affordable housing project. This development addresses a critical community need for affordable housing and will serve local families, farm workers and individuals at risk of homelessness.

"The City of Grover Beach is thrilled to embark on this journey with People's Self-Help Housing to bring 53 units of affordable housing to our community," said Grover Beach Mayor Karen Bright. "The Cleaver & Clark Commons project represents our shared commitment to building inclusive and vibrant neighborhoods that are accessible to all residents."

Located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and South 13th Street partially on property donated by the City, the Cleaver & Clark Commons project will house two distinct three-story buildings with thoughtfully designed apartments to meet the diverse needs of residents.

From cozy one-bedrooms to spacious three-bedroom residences, the project will provide affordable housing options that promote stability and well-being. In addition to the housing units, the development will also feature an interior courtyard with communal open spaces connected by walking paths, drought-tolerant landscaping and two community rooms for gatherings.

The Feb. 28 groundbreaking event represents a significant milestone for the City and its efforts to advance the Council's "Housing and Homelessness" Major City Goal. The Grover Beach City Council first approved the Cleaver & Clark Commons project in December 2021. In February 2023, California's Department of Finance granted People's Self-Help Housing $10.9 million to support its construction. Additional project funding includes contributions from multiple entities, such as the California Department of Housing & Community Development, the San Luis Obispo Housing Trust Fund, the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo, the City of Grover Beach, JP Morgan Chase Bank, N.A., and Redstone Equity Partners, LLC.

Project completion is expected in Winter 2025.

"I am deeply grateful to see this critical project for our City move forward to construction" said Grover Beach City Manager Matthew Bronson. "Through thoughtful design and inclusive planning, we are confident that this development will not only provide housing in the heart of our city, but also foster stability and well-being for our residents. I'm grateful for the City Council's leadership in championing this project and approving the donation of City land to help make it happen."
