*UPDATE* CRITICAL INCIDENT VIDEO - OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING – OCEAN BOULEVARD AND ELM AVENUE

Update 5/23/23 12:00 p.m.:

In accordance with current legislation, including Senate Bill 1421 and Assembly Bill 748, the Long Beach Police Department discloses certain records and video evidence related to critical incidents, such as officer involved shootings.

Today, the Department is releasing a Critical Incident Video regarding an officer involved shooting that occurred on April 16, 2023, in the area of Ocean Boulevard and Elm Avenue. Critical Incident Videos support the disclosure of certain documents and evidence by providing the public with an additional preliminary review of a critical incident.

As with all officer involved shootings, this incident is currently undergoing a thorough multi-level review process by the Police Department, as well as a separate independent investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

On April 16, 2023, a call of gunshots was reported; moments later, an officer on patrol heard shots and located a suspect matching the suspect description, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

At approximately 4:44 p.m., as officers were responding to reports of a shooting at 3rd Street and Elm Avenue, Police Dispatch aired a description of the suspect. An officer on patrol near Ocean Boulevard and Elm Avenue heard shots and located a male matching the suspect description. The officer attempted to contact the suspect at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect fired shots at the officer.

The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of the Long Beach Fire Department, who transported the suspect to a local hospital.

A firearm was recovered. No officers were injured.

The officer was equipped with a body-worn camera (BWC), however, the BWC was not activated until after the officer-involved shooting occurred. LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.

Additional shooting incidents were reported in the South Division area on April 16 and based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the same suspect could be responsible for these incidents.

• Approximately 1:02 p.m. in the 600 block of Ocean Boulevard - A shooting occurred with no injuries reported.
• Approximately 2:58 p.m. in the 700 block of Atlantic Avenue - A shooting occurred in which a male adult victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
• Approximately 4:44 p.m. near 3rd Street and Elm Avenue - A shooting occurred with no injuries reported.
• Approximately 4:46 p.m. near Ocean Boulevard and Elm Avenue - A shooting occurred with no injuries reported, which resulted in the officer-involved shooting.

As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death.
