Controlled burns planned to reduce risk after Parsons Creek fire

(Fort McMurray, AB - April 24, 2024) - Regional Emergency Services (RES) responded to a wildfire around 10:30 p.m. last night (April 23) near the Elsie Yanik and Dave McNeilly schools in Parsons Creek. The fire is now well under control, with only hot spots remaining to be extinguished.

Fire investigators were on the scene this morning to determine a cause. Once they complete their work, trained burn abatement teams will safely conduct some controlled burns in Parsons Creek to reduce the risk of future fires in the area.

Fire and smoke will be visible during controlled burns. Anyone living near controlled burning activity should keep their windows closed to keep smoke out of their homes.

Parsons Creek was identified this year as a priority area for burn abatement. Controlled burns will also be conducted in other neighborhoods in the coming days and weeks, including Wood Buffalo, Thickwood and other areas of Parsons Creek.

Controlled burns reduce wildfire risk

Controlled burns are carried out each spring to remove dead and dry surface fuels that collect over the winter months. It is an important step in helping to reduce wildfire risk in the region.

If time and conditions allow, controlled burns may be conducted in other areas within Fort McMurray. Follow the municipality's social media channels @rmwoodbuffalo for updates.
