(BOWIE, Md.) - Melba Moore, a multi-talented singer and award-winning actress, will perform a concert at Bowie State University on Saturday, February 10, in the Dionne Warwick Theater at the Fine and Performing Arts Center to celebrate Valentine's Day and punctuate the importance of Black History Month. Moore received widespread recognition for her history making role on Broadway in "Hair" and was the first African American woman to receive a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Broadway musical "Purlie" in 1971. She also had roles on Broadway in "Chicago," "Timbuktu" and "Les Miserables" but never ventured too far away from her first love which is music.

The songstress has been nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance - Female for the song "Lean on Me." Moore was the 2012 recipient of the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival Award and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 2023 that was sponsored by comedian Katt Williams. A street has been named in her honor in Newark, New Jersey. Moore says regardless of the accolades that have come her way from working in the entertainment industry, there were others who paved the way.

"Black women who are actors and singers now have more control of their own destiny," said Moore. "Diahann Carroll, Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner were trailblazers and created a path for me and others to follow. Now with the internet, artists and their marketing teams must understand how to use technology to promote their careers in a competitive industry. It's about controlling your narrative as much as possible."

Moore, a classically trained vocalist, is known for her five-octave range and has performed gospel, pop, R&B and other musical genres.

Saturday evening's dinner and concert with Melba Moore will begin at 6:30 p.m.
