Cedars Roundabout works - we're looking at ways to improve traffic flow

Posted on: 24 January 2024

We're working closely with our contractors on ways to improve the traffic flow at the Cedars Roundabout at Bickington.

And where possible, we're advising that people take alternative routes, use alternative methods of travel or travel at different times.

On Monday (January 22) major improvement works began at the roundabout - the work includes the installation of a new signalised crossing on the southern arm of the roundabout.

Once completed this will make it easier for people to cross the A3125 Bickington Road and help vehicles from the Bickington and Fremington area to enter the roundabout to ease traffic flow in that direction, as the crossing will be linked to queue monitors in the road.

The majority of works are being carried out using temporary traffic lights at the roundabout, and occasional overnight closures. The lights are manually controlled from 7am to 7pm.

Traffic queues and delays to bus services are being monitored and after the first days of operation the impacts are reducing.

Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways Management, Councillor Stuart Hughes said:

"With major projects such as these it is common that the first few days are the busiest and we expect congestion to ease as the scheme beds in.

"However, I recognise that the past few days have been particularly frustrating for many people, and we are looking at every aspect of the scheme and having daily discussions with Devon and Cornwall Police to find ways to help ease the congestion and improve traffic flow.

"For the time being, where possible, people should consider working from home, starting their journey earlier, travelling at a different time of day, use a different form of transport or use a different route.

"I apologise for any inconvenience caused and please be assured that every effort is being made to remedy the situation and improve traffic flow during the course of these works."

Information regarding the scheme can be found on our website.
