DEDE and EGAT jointly establish energy efficiency label No.5 standards for buildings and factories

4 June 2024

DEDE and EGAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the energy efficiency of factories and buildings to promote the adoption of the energy efficiency label No.5 among entrepreneurs and prepare for the implementation of Thai and international energy-saving laws and measures.

On May 29, 2024, Mr. Wattanapong Kurovat, Director-General of Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), and Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed the MOU to enhance the energy efficiency of existing factories and buildings by implementing energy efficiency labels. The signing ceremony was attended by DEDE and EGAT executives at EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters.

Mr. Wattanapong Kurovat, Director-General of DEDE said that DEDE has promoted energy efficiency in controlled factories and buildings through the enforcement and implementation of ministerial regulations which set energy management standards, criteria, and practices in controlled factories and buildings. In this collaboration, DEDE and EGAT will establish energy efficiency standards for factories and buildings as well as support the process of affixing energy efficiency label No.5 for factories and buildings that meet the criteria. It is expected to save energy of 500 ktoe per year, reduce electricity consumption by 5,864 million units, and reduce carbon emissions by 3.2 million tons by 2037.

Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, Governor of EGAT, added that EGAT has implemented the energy efficiency label No.5 for over 30 years. More than 470 million appliances have been labeled, resulting in a reduction in electricity consumption by over 37,000 million units and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by 20 million tons. Moreover, EGAT has conducted the energy consultancy project, focusing on providing advice to enhance energy efficiency in buildings and factories.

The collaboration with DEDE aims to enhance energy efficiency in existing buildings and factories through setting energy performance standards. It also involves preparing entrepreneurs for the enforcement of Thailand's energy conservation laws and the implementation of international measures which affect businesses in Thailand. Moreover, it integrates large-scale databases of energy consumption in the buildings and factories to facilitate policy decisions and implementation of measures related to Thailand's energy conservation in the future.

This collaboration will create mechanisms and potential guidelines for enhancing energy efficiency in high energy-consuming sectors. It aims to generate positive outcomes for energy and environmental aspects, contribute to the national economy, and support the goal of Carbon Neutrality.
