About 4 000 Ukraine citizens registered with Latvian educational institutions and 8.7 thousand registered as employees16.04.2024

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) estimate shows that 4 thousand Ukraine citizens1 having the status of temporary protection in Latvia were registered with Latvian education institutions on 1 January 2024.

At the beginning of 2024, in general education institutions at pre-primary, primary and secondary level there were around 3.7 thousand Ukraine citizens having the status of temporary protection in Latvia, in vocational education institutions around 140, and in tertiary education institutions just over 100.

Employment of Ukraine citizens

State Revenue Service data show that 8.7 thousand Ukraine citizens were registered as employees at the beginning of 2024.

In terms of economic activities, the largest share of Ukrainians was employed in industry (22.8 %), followed by accommodation and food service activities (13.3 %), as well as wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (13.0 %). Financial, insurance, scientific, administrative and real estate activities employed 11.1 % and construction 9.0 %.

In terms of occupations, 38.7 % of the employed Ukraine citizens (registered as employees) were engaged in elementary occupations (e.g., were domestic, hotel and office cleaners and helpers, kitchen helpers, shelf fillers, etc.), 16.1 % were craft and related trades workers, 14.8 % service and sales workers, 12.7 % professionals as well as technicians and associate professionals, and 0.9 % managers.

The data in the graph only cover the people occupation whereof is indicated in the State Revenue Service data.

On 3 June 2024 CSB will release the annual population estimates for the beginning of 2024 and annual population change (in usual residents of Latvia, demographic indicators, migration), amongst which will inform about the number of Ukraine citizens having a status of temporary protection in Latvia. CSB estimates show that only 60 % of the Ukraine citizens having the status of temporary protection in Latvia and having registered their residence in Latvia were living here permanently at the beginning of 2023.

Methodological information

1 Ukraine citizens the place of residence whereof was declared in Latvia at the beginning of the respective month and who have a residence permit for at least 11 months, as well as those who meet at least one of the following criteria: the person has been granted a status of temporary protection in Latvia or has Ukrainian citizenship.
