City of Bismarck to Celebrate Arbor Day May 3

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Bismarck Forestry Division will host a community recognition program and ceremonial tree planting Friday, May 3, 2024 at 1:00 PM, at Sleepy Hollow Park, 2899 E Divide Ave, Bismarck. The public is welcome and invited to attend. The 2024 Arbor Day theme is: "Find Your Roots, Plant a Tree".

Each year a ceremonial Arbor Day tree is dedicated to a local citizen whose efforts have made a significant contribution to Bismarck's urban forest. The 2024 ceremonial tree planting will be dedicated in recognition of Dan Cashman, for 60 years in the nursery business. His love and passion for trees will be enjoyed by the citizens of Bismarck for generations to come.

The Arbor Day Ceremony will include Apple Seed Awards presented for 2023 landscape beautification efforts on public property, a Beautification Award for 2023 landscape beautification efforts on private property, and recognition of 2023 Partners in Planting program sponsors. Bismarck will also be celebrating 47 years as a Tree City USA.

Mayor Schmitz will be in attendance to read the Arbor Day Proclamation and give remarks. St. Mary's Grade School 3rd grade classes will be present and give Arbor Day presentations.

The tree planting will take place (weather permitting) at the close of the program.

Additional Arbor Week activities include:

  • May 1 - 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (or while supplies last) - Plant a Tree with Scheels - first 100 families receive a free Ponderosa Pine seedling in honor of Arbor Day.
  • May 2 - 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. - Arbor Week celebration at Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library. Tree cookie magnet and necklace craft.
  • May 2 - 1:30 p.m. - St. Mary's Grade School Pre K and 1st grade classroom visits.
