Message from the Chancellor: Fallen Eagle Professor Kenneth Campbell

Dear NCCU Family:

It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the passing of Mr. Kenneth Campbell, a North Carolina Central University (NCCU) alumnus and assistant professor in the department of mass communication, on Friday, April 19.

As a faculty member, Mr. Campbell was instrumental in establishing and advising the Nineteen10 Film Alliance, a student organization dedicated to film. He actively participated in departmental events, supporting students and colleagues, and consistently strived to enhance the department's strengths with innovative ideas. In his role as a teacher, Mr. Campbell aimed to connect with students at their level and guide them towards their potential success. He maintained a respectful and composed demeanor, and fostered a conducive learning environment.

According to Calvin Hall, Ph.D., chair of the mass communication department, Mr. Campbell was one of the department's shining lights who led efforts to advance storytelling through film. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

He obtained a bachelor's degree in mass communication with a concentration in media studies from NCCU in 2017, followed by an MFA in film production from Howard University and a post-graduate certificate in documentary arts from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

A viewing will be held on Friday, May 3, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St., in Durham. His funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11 a.m., at World Overcomers Christian Church, 2933 S. Miami Blvd., also in Durham. Prior to the service, Mr. Campbell's family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service will also be available via Zoom using the meeting ID: 845 514 3350.

During this challenging time, students are encouraged to seek support as needed. Counseling appointments can be arranged by calling 919-530-7646 or visiting the Student Health Building, 2nd Floor, Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drop-in hours are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with potential wait times. Crisis management services are available after 5 p.m. through the same contact number. Faculty and staff may access ComPsych guidance resources on the university's HR page.
