The Boston Police Department Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Watchman David Estes Who Was Killed in the Line of Duty on This Day 176 Years Ago

The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Watchman David Estes 174 years ago today. On April 27, 1848, Watchman David Estes was killed when he suffered a fatal gunshot wound while attempting to apprehend a burglar in the area of Liberty Square, Downtown.

Watchman Estes had worked for the Boston Police Department for over 12 years and was 37-years-old at the time of his death. Watchman Estes left behind a grieving wife.

Watchman Estes was laid to rest at South Burial Ground in Boston. His name is forever imprinted on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on Panel 3, West Line 23. His name can also be seen on the BPD's Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts State Law Enforcement Memorial located on the lawn of the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

In Boston, a Hero Sign is posted at the intersection of Batterymarch Street and Water Street in Downtown. The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city.
