Demolition works begin at Overdale

The demolition of the dilapidated and unused healthcare buildings at the back of the Overdale site has begun, as work progresses towards delivering new healthcare facilities for Jersey.

Under the New Healthcare Facilities Programme, Overdale is the proposed location for a new Acute Hospital, which will include emergency and critical care, women's and children's services, operating theatres, the renal unit, and the majority of inpatient wards.

Demolition of the remainder of the existing buildings on the site is planned for 2024. With the continued support of the States Assembly in Summer 2024, the construction of the new Acute Hospital will start in 2025. The facility will open its doors to patients and staff in 2028.

The demolition works follow the completion of the move of outpatient services from Overdale to the new Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre at Les Quennevais in the summer. While outpatient services located at Overdale have now been transferred, Samarès Ward will remain at Overdale until a new facility, of the same or better quality, is identified. Discussions are underway for this move to be achieved, and staff, patients and their families will be kept fully informed at all times.

Asbestos surveys have been completed for the former healthcare buildings at the back of the Overdale site - this enabled asbestos to be removed from these buildings and safely disposed.

Sustainability is a priority for the Programme, and much of the inert rubble created during demolition will be stored at the site for to be used in the construction of the Acute Facility.

Deputy Tom Binet, the Minister for Infrastructure, said: "This is a significant milestone in the delivery of the new Acute Hospital that the Island so desperately needs. We know Islanders want us to get on and deliver the healthcare facilities that health staff and Islanders have been waiting for.

"Now that we have started progress with the removal of the buildings at the back of the Overdale site, we look forward to sharing the early designs for the new Acute Hospital early in 2024, when we will be asking Islanders for their feedback."
