Atlantic Ballet Company’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the Camden Amphitheatre

Posted August 05, 2021

On Wednesday, August 11, at 5:00 pm, the Camden Public Library will host dancers from Camden's Atlantic Ballet Company, for a performance of their original version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' in the Amphitheatre. This is a delightful dance production with colorful costumes and beautiful sets, created by directors Michele and Heather Cox. It will capture the attention of all ages and is appropriate for viewing by the entire family. The Atlantic Ballet Company is part of the P2P Dance Center of Camden, Rockport, and Belfast.

This heartwarming musical adventure tells the story of a young farm girl, Dorothy, and her adorable poodle, Tutu. The tale begins at a farm where this inseparable duo is frolicking with the farm hands, sheep, and pigs when they are suddenly swept away by an ominous tornado. Dorothy and Tutu are welcomed into the land of the Munchkins by the kind and good Witch of the South, while being targeted by the wrath of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Both the Oz and a mystical winged unicorn from the Emerald City come to Dorothy and Tutu's rescue and return them to their home, sweet home.
Twenty dancers will perform in 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' as a culmination of the P2P Dance Center's 'Dance your Dream' Summer Camp Program. The students participated in ballet, stretch, and floor barre classes, as part of a four to six week summer dance camp. The dancers have learned hip hop, ballet, jazz, and modern choreography, which they will perform in the upcoming production.

Each dancer was asked to draw, paint, or sketch his or her rendition of a particular scene or character from 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' The students' artwork will be displayed at the show in the Amphitheatre.

This production is free and open to the public. Please bring your own seating. The rain date for the show is Thursday, August 12, at 5:00 pm. For more information on this and other events happening in the Camden Amphitheatre, visit librarycamden.org.
