School of Music, Theatre, and Dance presents "Le Dernier Sorcier"

By Lydia Hommel '26 and Alexandria Atencio '26, February 23, 2024
Whimsical chamber opera will run select dates February 28-March 6.

The Ithaca College School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will commence the spring portion of its theatre production season with the chamber opera "Le Dernier Sorcier,"set in a world where magic is fading and darkness threatens to take over.

"Le Dernier Sorcier" will be presented in Clark Theatre and run select dates between February 28-March 6. This production will be directed by professor emerita Susannah Berryman, with music direction by associate professor Christopher Zemliauskas, who also provided original orchestrations.

A talkback with the cast will be held after the 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, March 2.

With music by Pauline Viardot Garcia and text by Ivan Turgenev, "Le Dernier Sorcier" is a chamber opera in two acts. The story revolves around Krakamiche, a once-powerful sorcerer whose presence in the great woods has upset the fairies, the forest's rightful inhabitants, and disturbed the harmony of the land. Through the combined efforts of the fairy folk and their queen, the sorcerer's daughter and her prince, and a hapless valet, Krakamiche ultimately learns key truths about humility, love, and living in harmony with the natural world.

Please note that the production contains flashing lights and haze.
