Search and intervention mission in the Black Sea on a potential drifting mine

On Thursday, March 7th, the 30th "Sublocotenent Alexandru Axente" Minesweeper, a Romanian Naval Forces' team of EOD Divers specialized in the explosive device defusing and destruction and a PUMA naval helicopter have been conducting, starting 7.00, a reconnaissance mission of the airspace in Costinești -Tuzla - 23 August - Mangalia area in order to identify a floating object-possibly a drifting mine.

The presence of the metallic floating object was signaled to the Coast Guard and the Romanian Naval Forces' intervention was requested in accordance with the national operational procedures in force for these situations.

The Naval Forces Staff's leadership immediately requested that all necessary measures be taken in order to send the military ship, the EOD diving team and the PUMA naval helicopter to the maritime district in question to investigate the situation.

We shall provide additional details after concluding the intervention.

After the launch of the unprovoked military aggression by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, on February 24th, 2022, 95 naval mines were destroyed in the Black Sea, this being the Romanian Naval Forces' sixth intervention for the destruction of a naval mine drifting from the maritime zones north of Romania, where the war is conducted.
The first naval mine drifting in the Romanian Naval Forces' area of responsibility was destroyed by the EOD divers of the 39th Diving Center in March 2022, 70 km far from Capu Midia.
