Earlier this month alongside - Wadandi Traditional Custodian Zac Webb, Shire President Jula Meldrum and Manager Arts Culture Community and Events Stephanie Johnson attended the WALGA's Aboriginal Engagement Forum 2024.

The event presented a day full of stories of learning, stories and fostering collaboration between Aboriginal Communities and their Local Governments to continue building momentum of the reconciliation journey.

This year we explored the theme 'Djinaning Koora, Djinaning Boorda' which translated, means Looking back to Move Forward. The theme acknowledges that our shared path to reconciliation is not linear, and presented a platform to explore how reflection, sharing experiences and innovation, we can inspire each other and continually move forward.

Representing The Shire and Undalup Association, the trio were invited to present in a panel discussion: Meaningful Engagement Across Local Government Functions, where alongside the City of Melville and Shire of Kojonup, shared our 'Jenna Yen Mundamug' Walking Together Strategy.

The event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the AMR Shire's ongoing commitment to listening, learning and collaborating with our first nations people to develop authentic and genuine partnerships and to help co-create a better future for all.

Initiatives that were highlighted include the dual naming of the Margaret River HEART to Nala Bardip Mia and most recently The Recreation Centre to Nala Waabi Mia.

We're proud to recognised as a leading local government in this space based on our culture of genuine engagement with Undalup in the community as well as within the Shire.

We regularly engage with our traditional custodians across all business areas inside The Shire and formally through our quarterly meetings with Undalup Association,

Together we have incorporated Wadandi culture with our dual naming initiative. This includes Margaret River HEART to Nala Bardip Mia and most recently, the newly refurbished Recreation Centre to Nala Waabi Mia translated to 'Our Play House.'

The event presented new opportunities and sparked many new ideas we're exploring how to implement - watch this space!
