Chris Buckley Wins Don Bolles Medal

Chris Buckley, our China correspondent, was awarded the Don Bolles Medal for 'extraordinary courage in standing up to intimidation or efforts to suppress the truth.' He was given the honor along with three other reporters from The Wall Street Journal.

'China makes it incredibly difficult for journalists to uncover truths that the government would rather keep hidden from the rest of the world,' said Cheryl W. Thompson, the Investigative Reporters and Editors board president. 'These journalists have all shown extraordinary courage in digging up those important stories, and as a result, they faced the wrath of the Chinese government.'

Chris spent 78 days in Wuhan under lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic, and he - along with his colleagues in China - broke exclusive stories about China's persecution of the Uighurs.

For his work, Chris was forced to leave China, his home for many years.

Congratulations Chris, this is more than well deserved. We are all so proud of Chris and the whole team in Asia.
