Three Black Hills State University students have been selected as recipients of the highly competitive Gilman Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

The three recipients are Ximena Contreras from Hill City, Taylor Guiot from St. Louis, Missouri, and Bailey Froelich from Hazen, North Dakota. These students have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership skills, and a commitment to cross-cultural learning.

Contreras, a Spanish Education major, will be enrolling in courses taught fully in Spanish in Spain. This experience will further her goal of becoming a future Spanish teacher. Guiot, an environmental science major, will also embark on a journey to Spain to study a variety of electives such as ecological systems, the mediterranean diet, and European relations. Froelich, a business administration and human resources major, will be heading to France to study international business and take French language classes.

"We are incredibly proud of these three students for being selected as Gilman Scholars and for taking advantage of this incredible opportunity," said Kaitlin Palmer, international affairs coordinator at Black Hills State University. "This prestigious scholarship will enhance their academic experience, develop career skills, and broaden their horizons. The Gilman Scholarship has helped to expand access and allowed more students to benefit from the life-changing experience of studying abroad."

The Gilman Scholarship contributes to U.S. national security and economic prosperity by successfully broadening U.S. undergraduate student participation in international education and cultural exchange, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the United States and other countries across the globe.
