Cllr Salim Chowdhury, Harrow’s first Bangladeshi Mayor

Cllr Salim Chowdhury has been officially appointed Mayor of Harrow at a special Mayor making ceremony at annual council tonight, Thursday 16 May.

The former Mayor Cllr Ramji Chauhan handed over the Mayoral Robe and Chain to the new Mayor of Harrow - Cllr Salim Chowdhury.

As Harrow's 72ndMayor, Cllr Chowdhury will be Harrow's first British Bangladeshi Mayor. Passionate about bringing people together, Cllr Chowdhury's theme for this year is 'Unity'. His chosen charity is London's Community Kitchen - a charity that helps those struggling with food poverty.

Cllr Chowdhury, aged 50 is no stranger to Harrow. He moved to the borough when he was 17. His passion to make a difference and ensure people's voices were heard, won him a seat at the council in 2006 - 2010 and more recently from 2022 onwards. He currently serves as a councillor for the London Borough of Harrow in Centenary ward, having previously represented Pinner South ward.

Away from politics and council business, Cllr Chowdhury continues his love for food, owning two local restaurants in the borough.

Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Salim Chowdhury said:

"It's a privilege and honour to be appointed as the new Mayor of Harrow - and the first British-Bengali mayor.

"As such, I'm reminded of just how diverse our borough is and why we should always celebrate this. I am looking forward to meeting people and community groups - it is these people that make Harrow so special.

"I would like to thank the outgoing mayor who I have been supporting this last year as deputy. I will continue both his and the legacy of previous mayors to bring people together. While I look forward to starting my Mayoral year, I encourage everyone to support my charity, London's Community Kitchen who do incredible things to help those most in need."

"Finally, I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me and my family over the years and given their trust in me to take on this role."

During the Mayor making ceremony, Cllr Salim Chowdry's wife, Jesmin Chowdhury was appointed Mayoress.
