Moolenaar Legislation to Prevent TB Outbreaks Moves Forward

On Thursday, Congressman John Moolenaar's legislation to prevent tuberculosis outbreaks was discussed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. At a hearing on rare diseases, the Committee's Subcommittee on Health considered Moolenaar's H.R. 6705, the Effective Screening and Testing for Tuberculosis Act, and H.R. 7188, the Shandra Eisenga Human Cell and Tissue Product Safety Act.

"My legislation to prevent TB outbreaks will save lives and help families avoid tragedies like the one we had in Michigan with Shandra Eisenga. It was wonderful to be joined by Shandra's family today, I am thankful to my colleagues for considering these bills. I will continue my work to make sure this legislation moves forward in Congress," said Moolenaar, after the hearing.

Moolenaar's legislation is a response to the passing of Shandra Eisenga of Marion who contracted TB after receiving a tissue donation from an infected donor. Shandra's sister, Tarin Brunink, joined Moolenaar at today's hearing. Brunink serves as Moolenaar's Director of Constituent Services in his Clare office.
