Annette’s dream of giving back is in good health with CQU and Free TAFE - CQUniversity

By Greg Chapman

Annette Wano is destined to make a difference to Mackay's Torres Strait Islander community thanks to CQU's Nursing training and the Free TAFE initiative.

The proud Meriam Samsep woman is currently immersed in the final stages of her Diploma of Nursing, a dream she said wouldn't have been possible without the Queensland Government's Free Nursing initiative.

"The opportunity of having fee-free nursing courses has been a true blessing, making this endeavour possible for me," she said.

"When I discovered nursing was among the available courses, I wasted no time in enrolling, driven by a sense of purpose and eagerness to contribute."

Annette said she believed strongly that more First Nations representation was needed in the health sector.

"I embarked on this journey to upskill and pursue nursing to make a difference within my community. As a proud Torres Strait Islander descendant from Murray Island, belonging to the Meriam Samsep tribe, I strongly feel the need for more representation in the healthcare sector," she said.

"This, I believe, is crucial in bridging the gap and ensuring better outcomes for our people.

Annette said the nursing training provides her with many moments of joy - from continuously expanding her knowledge and skills, to the unwavering support from her teachers and Indigenous Engagement Officer, who she says, have been instrumental in her journey.

Annette has been undertaking placement at the Mackay Hospital and she is currently exploring opportunities that align with her new qualifications.

"I'm incredibly grateful and proud of those who came before me, those who support me now, and the young ones following behind," she said.

"As a sole parent of four boys, I waited until they were older before pursuing further studies. It warms my heart that they're proud of me and witness my dedication to studying and attending placements while working.

"I always encourage others that it's never too late to chase their dreams. With a positive mindset and determination, success is possible. I'll continue to be a role model in every way I can.

"Whether it's traveling for work or pursuing a Bachelor's degree, I'll see where this journey leads me."

Free Nursing is fully funded by the Queensland Government through an investment of up to $87.5 million to support 3500 training places in 2024.

The Diploma of Nursing is being delivered by TAFE Queensland, CQUniversity and Mater Education across the state.
