SHARE RELEASE:
Fewer cattle than a year ago

About 456,000 cattle were bred in 2023. In an annual comparison, the number of cattle went down by about 2%.

The number of young cattle under 1 year of age decreased by about 5,000 (about 3%) to about 145,000. While the number of young bulls for slaughter increased by about 18% (about 1,000 animals), the number of young heifers for slaughter went down by about 22% (about 1,000 animals). In addition, the number of animals for fattening decreased: of young bulls by about 5% (about 4,000 animals) and of young heifers by about 1% (about 1,000 animals).

The number of young cattle, 1-2 years, decreased by about 3% or about 4,000 animals to about 126,000. The number of breeding heifers increased by about 1% over 2022. There were about 49,000 breeding heifers (i.e. 1,000 more), about 21,000 of them in calf (about 15% more) and about 28,000 others (7% fewer). The number of fattening heifers decreased by about 6% (about 1,000 animals) and the number of bulls, oxen by about 6% (about 4,000 animals).

The number of cattle over 2 years was about 186,000, which is about the same as a year before (47 fewer animals). The number of breeding heifers in this category of animals over 2 years was about 19,000 or about 4% higher (about 1,000 animals). The number of heifers in calf decreased by about 1% (around 200 fewer animals), while the number of others increased by about 23% (around 1,000 animals more). The number of heifers for fattening in this category over 2 years increased by about 11%. Similar less numerous categories are also bulls for breeding, and bulls and oxen for fattening. The number of the former was about 1,000 or about 58% higher and of the latter about 7,000 or about 23% higher than a year before. However, it is important to note that this category is rather less numerous and a rather high index does not reflect the real changes in the number of cattle.

About 155,000 cows were bred on agricultural holdings, which is about 3,000 or about 2% fewer than a year ago.

The fewest pigs since 1991, for the first time fewer than 200,000

All agricultural holdings were breading about 196,000 pigs, which is a decrease by exactly 3% or about 6,000 animals over the previous year.

The number of pigs has been declining for a number of years. In 2023, it was for the first time lower than 200,000 and thus the lowest since 1991.The number was the highest in 2002 when 656,000 pigs were bred in Slovenia.

A decrease was not observed in the categories of 'breeding pigs (50 kg and over), gilts mated' (by about 27% more) and 'gilts not yet mated' (by about 11% more, all together about 3,200 gilts), 'fattening pigs, 110 kg or more' (by exactly 11% more, in the category of fattening pigs this is the most numerous category, about 52,000 animals) and 'piglets 20-50 kg', where the number of animals grew by about 7% or 2,000 animals (in this category there were all together 33,000 animals).

A decrease was observed in the category of 'piglets under 20 kg - total', where the number of animals went down by about 9% or about 4,000. In this category there were about 43,000 animals. The number of animals in the subcategory of suckling piglets remained the same as a year before (29 animals fewer), while in the subcategory of other piglets it decreased by about 17% (about 4,000 animals).

In the category 'fattening pigs - total' the number of animals went down by about 3% (about 4,000 animals, the total number in this category is about 107,000 animals).

A noticeable decrease in this category was recorded in the subcategory fattening pigs 50-80 kg (by about 19% or about 6,000 animals). In addition, the number in the subcategory 80-110 kg declined by about 9% (about 3,000 animals), while the number in the most numerous subcategory in this category of fattened pigs '110 kg or more' increased by 11% (about 5,000 animals).

As regards the number of 'breeding pigs (50 kg and over) - total', a decrease by about 3% (about 500 animals) was recorded. There were in total fewer than 14,000 breeding pigs in Slovenia, the fewest after 1991. The number was the highest in 2000 at about 68,000.

The number of 'breeding pigs (50 kg and over) - total' decreased in all numerically larger subcategories, of saws mated, where the number went down by about 8% (about 500 animals fewer than a year before). The number of saws not mated also decreased by about 8% (about 300 animals fewer). In the same period the number of mated gilts went up by about 27% (about 400 animals more) and gilts not yet mated by about 11% (i.e. 100 animals).

The number of boars (the least numerous subcategory in the category of breeding animals) decreased by about 16% (80 animals fewer; there were in total about 400 boars).

Fewer poultry than a year ago

The total number of poultry was about 5,909,000, which is a decrease by about 3% or about 209,000 animals over the previous year.

The number of hens went up. The annual comparison shows a 24% increase (about 338,000 animals) to about 1,757,000. In the same comparison, the number of broilers, the most numerous category among poultry decreased by about 13% or about 506,000 animals. A drop was also noticed in the number of other hens (spring chickens, cocks) by about 2% (about 10,000 animals to 623,000). The number of turkeys also went down, but this category is much less numerous than broilers; there were about 34,000 or about 32% fewer turkeys than a year before. Their total number was about 61,000.

All other species of poultry (geese, ducks, guinea fowls, ostriches and other poultry) are numerically very small compared to the poultry total and do not have any significant impact on the poultry total.

The number of sheep down …

About 116,000 sheep were bred, which is a decrease of about 1% or about 1,000 animals.

The number of lambs and young sheep increased by about 2% or about 1,000 (there were in total about 29,000 lambs and young sheep), while the number of breeding sheep decreased by about 1% or about 1,000.

The highest decrease in the category of breeding animals was recorded in the subcategories of younger breeding animals (those who by 1 December 2023 had not had offspring yet): milk ewes by 38% and other ewes by about 24% (it is important to know that these subcategories are rather less numerous).

The number of older breeding animals (those who by 1 December 2023 had already had offspring) went up: milk ewes by about 29% and other ewes by about 5% (the latter subcategory is the most numerous; altogether there were about 64,000 animals). In the category of breeding animals there were in total about 83,000 animals.

At the same time, there were about 5,000 rams, which is about 8% fewer than a year before.

… of goats up

About 27,000 goats were bred, which is about 1,000 or 3% more than a year before.

The number of goatlings and young goats increased by about 8% (about 400 animals) to about 6,000. The number of breeding goats (in total about 19,000) increased by about 2% (about 400 animals more).

The increase in the number of breeding animals was recorded in older animals (those who by 1 December 2023 had already had offspring): the number of milk goats (less numerous subcategory) dropped by about 18% (1,000 animals), but the number of other goats (the most numerous subcategory among breeding animals) increased by about 20% (about 2,000 animals); in this subcategory there are about 10,000 animals.

The number of younger animals (those who by 1 December 2023 had not had offspring yet) decreased: milk goats (the least numerous subcategory among breeding animals) by about 31% (600 animals), while the number of other goats increased by about 7% (200 animals); this subcategory, too, is rather less numerous.

The number of he-goats increased by about 2% to about 2,000.
