Kristina Bezanson, certified arborist and coordinator of the Stockbridge Arboriculture associate degree program, received the 2023 Ryan Award given by the International Society of Arboriculture's (ISA) New England chapter for outstanding service in advancing the field of arboriculture.

The Dr. H. Dennis P. Ryan III Award is the highest honor bestowed by the ISA New England chapter, given to an active chapter member once a year in recognition of outstanding service in advancing the principles, ideals and practices of arboriculture.

Ryan, professor emeritus in the Department of Environmental Conservation, is a former coordinator of the Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Program at UMass Amherst and served in academia as a faculty member for more than 30 years. As successor to Ryan, Bezanson serves as lecturer and coordinator of the Arboriculture and Urban Forestry Program and has overseen its expansion to include online and alternate-site components.

"It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers for my teaching work at Stockbridge and UMass carrying on Dr. Ryan's legacy," Bezanson says, adding that she is excited by her new focus on workforce development and environmental justice, training students from marginalized communities to become arboriculture professionals.

Bezanson is a Massachusetts certified arborist, ISA Board master certified arborist and qualified tree risk assessor. She serves as vice president and president-elect of New England ISA and is a member of the ISA Student and Early Career Committee.

More information about Bezanson, Ryan and the arboriculture associate degree program can be found on the Stockbridge School of Agriculture website.
