Agroforestry in Lusatia: New paths for agriculture

Agroforestry in Lusatia: New paths for agriculture

How we can counter the effects of climate change in land use and agriculture is the subject of research in the AgroBaLa project. The project results will be presented to the public at a final event on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the Domin farm in Peickwitz near Senftenberg.

Over the past three and a half years, sustainable solutions for land use under intensifying climate conditions and extreme weather conditions have been the focus of research by the four project partners: Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), Landwirtschaftsbetrieb Domin, ZGJ Landwirtschafts GmbH and the German Agroforestry Association. In addition to climate-resilient agricultural areas, the topics that are also intended to increase their value creation potential include, for example, new cultivation methods, improved material flow management and the production and use of biochar. With the help of agroforestry, this can be achieved and Lusatia can establish itself as a model region.

Complete program

The AgroBaLa research project - agroforestryrecycling management as the basisfor a structurally rich and climate-resilient agriculturewith high value creation potential - is a project of the Land-Innovation-Lausitz initiative. It focuses on the development of a system solution for sustainable agroforestry land use. The aim is to increase the climate resilience and value creation potential of arable land in Lusatia and thus make a significant contribution to strengthening rural areas. Together with the Domin farm in Peickwitz, ZGJ Landwirtschafts GmbH in Calau and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, DeFAF e.V. is playing a key role in the implementation of the project. The AgroBaLa project has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2021 as part of the "Change through innovation in the region" (WIR!) program.
