AUSTIN, TX - Austin Water crews are reporting a domestic wastewater overflow from a 24-inch wastewater main located in Walnut Creek in the Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. The overflow was stopped on Sunday evening and repairs are underway. Overflowed wastewater was contained in the area around the broken pipe and re-entered the wastewater collection system through the other end of the broken pipe.
Austin Water and Watershed Protection staff accessed the creek and currently do not see any impacts in water in the creek downstream of the break. Staff currently estimates that more than 100,000 gallons of wastewater spilled from the wastewater main due to the break in the line. As noted, this wastewater was contained and re-entered the wastewater collection system.
The overflow was reported about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2021. Austin Water crews responded and established a bypass line which stopped the overflow by Sunday, June 13, around 8:45 p.m. A contractor is on site to repair the wastewater main. Repairs are expected to take about one week to complete.
A portion of two trails and a service road at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park are closed during the work. Park visitors are asked to observe closure signs to ensure safety of the construction crews and park visitors.
This overflow has not affected Austin's drinking water supply. Officials with the Texas Commission Environmental Quality have been notified of the situation.
