The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Gerardo Gonzalez as superintendent of Chamizal National Memorial. Gonzalez will begin his new assignment on April 8.

"I am pleased to announce the selection of Gerardo as Chamizal National Monument Superintendent and welcome him to the NPS family," said Deputy Regional Director Lance Hatten. "Gerado, a retired United States Army veteran, is an exemplary leader who values people, builds strong community relationships, and promotes teamwork."

Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the diplomatic resolution of the century-long boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico in the border region of El Paso Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. As a living memorial, the park celebrates goodwill and fosters cultural exchange. Gonzalez will oversee a staff of 20 NPS employees and work closely with local community, Tribes, and international partners. The position also supervises Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.

"I am humbled and honored to be selected as the next Chamizal National Memorial superintendent," said Gonzalez. "I have long admired the National Park Service mission of preserving our country's natural and cultural resources and having the opportunity to lead a team of professionals completing that mission in my hometown of El Paso is beyond special. I look forward to working with the local community in celebrating our local heritage while reenforcing historical ties and forging new relationships."

As a former command sergeant major, Gonzalez' experience translates well to this superintendency. In his military career, he effectively managed appropriated dollars, directed large projects working with contractors, and gained admiration from leaders in the city and county of El Paso for maintaining community centered relations. He has also fostered relationships with the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Tigua Tribe council and the Tribal Cacique. Gonzalez currently resides in the El Paso area with his wife and three children.
