Hapag-Lloyd has published its Sustainability Report 2022. It provides information on the various measures taken by the company in 2022 for a more sustainable future. The report illustrates Hapag-Lloyd's commitment to clean shipping and environmental protection and highlights the numerous relief activities carried out by employees worldwide.

Enhanced management with focus on sustainable fuels and more efficient ships
On its way to the ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2045, Hapag-Lloyd is stepping up its measures to decarbonise its fleet. "In 2022, we formed a dedicated decarbonisation team and made great progress in introducing biofuels and increasing the efficiency of our fleet," says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.

In 2022, 24 ships were sailing on modern biofuel blends, of which the company has purchased more than 120,000 tonnes to provide its customers with more sustainable transport options and thus reduce their overall environmental footprint. To further reduce emissions, Hapag-Lloyd has initiated an extensive modernisation programme for its existing fleet, comprising more than 150 vessels over the next five years. Flow-optimised bulge buoys, low-resistance underwater coatings and redesigned ship propellers will increase the efficiency of the fleet and reduce fuel consumption. The first ship was already modernised in September 2022.

Decarbonising offices and giving back to society
Hapag-Lloyd is consistently pursuing further opportunities for decarbonisation. So-called internal Green Teams are working to further reduce energy consumption and emissions in offices worldwide, thereby raising employees' awareness of sustainable action.

In terms of its social responsibility, the shipping company wants to set a good example by supporting and initiating various aid projects, such as the expanded aid programme for refugees and victims of the war in Ukraine, as well as the participation of many colleagues from around the world in marine and environmental protection initiatives, such as Coastal Cleanup Day.

Hapag-Lloyd's Sustainability Report 2022 demonstrates the company's effective transformation approach and sends a clear signal to the industry - in line with this year's report motto: "Making a difference in the future of shipping".
