In winter 2024 the Old Church Society, which oversees the popular performing arts venue, will begin refurbishing its historic NW building with support from a Cultural Trust grant award.

A fire-safety inspection last year found the venue's sprinkler pipes had partially corroded. The grant will ensure the fire systems are up to code, allowing The Old Church (TOC) to maintain operations.

Built between 1882 and1883, the church is a striking example of Carpenter Gothic style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2016, TOC has presented concerts by local musicians like Michael Hurley, and hosted lectures such as the "We Can Listen" series, dedicated to discussing ideas around social justice.

Through this programming, Executive Director Constance Bracewell says the space "invites people to examine the role of Portland's history by engaging with its contemporary culture."
