Minster Nguyen Chi Dung meets former British Prime Minister
(MPI) - Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung asked the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) consider support for Vietnam in a number of prioritised areas such as green growth, clean energy transition, science-technology and innovation, at his reception for former Prime Minister of the UK and TBI President Tony Blair on March 10.

Minister Dung lauded contributions and activities of the TBI in helping countries worldwide addressing challenges, including Vietnam.

He briefed the guest about Vietnam's socio-economic situation and said, the country targets becoming an upper middle-income country with a modern industrial base by 2030, and a developed with high-income country by 2045, and has committed to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. These are goals but also huge challenges for Vietnam.

Vietnam has focuses on restructuring the economy, industries, fields and territories to enhance competitiveness and create new driving force for development, in which set out three major strategic breakthroughs of institutions, infrastructure and high-quality human resources.

The minister said that the country added two new breakthroughs of science and technology, innovation, cultural values and people. These are strategic breakthroughs that create new impetus for the economy's faster and more sustainable development.

Vietnam also pays much attention to do research, lure investment, connect with investment fund and large corporations worldwide to boost the growth model of green growth and digital, circular and knowledge economy, he added.

The Government of Vietnam has issued strategies and plans in order to create momentum and be in line with global trends. Therefore, the country needs international partners' helps in transforming energy, engaging in energy industries such as wind power, solar power and new energies, producing semiconductor, building a financial centre and developing the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC). Minister Dung expressed his hope that the TBI assist Vietnam in these fields.

Tony Blair, for his side, applauded Vietnam's increasing position in international arena and said, he has studied the national master plan as well as Vietnam's development goals.

Blair noted that Vietnam and TBI share similar priorities in terms of attracting investment in clean energy, developing financial centers and innovation centers. He expressed his believe that the two sides will have specific cooperation plans in the time to come.

Minister Dung also called for the TBI's assistance in specific plans, consultation in developing an international financial center and collaboration with the NIC. He hoped to receive support from the UK and TBI in terms of resources, experience and knowledge with concretised mechanism, policies and road maps./.
