Nominations are now open for the Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, Endowed by The Rockefeller Foundation. This accolade acknowledges exceptional achievements in international agriculture and food production based on scientific research and application. With a focus on individuals under the age of 40, the award comes with a $10,000 prize. Nominations close on June 15, 2024.

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug was a renowned scientist and humanitarian known for his pioneering work in agriculture, particularly in developing high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat varieties. His work transformed agriculture in Mexico during the 1940's and 1950's and later in Asia and Latin America, sparking what today is known as the "Green Revolution." His efforts saved millions from hunger and famine, earning him recognition as one of the most impactful figures in human history.

This award recognizes science-based achievement in international agriculture and food production by an individual under the age of 40. Recipients embody the intellectual bravery, resilience and resolve exemplified by Dr. Borlaug as a young scientist in Mexico combating global hunger and poverty.

The award ceremony will take place on October 30, 2024, in conjunction with the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue. The Borlaug Dialogue, held with the World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony, gathers global leaders and experts to address key food security and agriculture issues, fostering collaboration among over 1,200 attendees from 65+ countries. Since its establishment in 2011, this prize has been awarded to twelve outstanding individuals representing diverse backgrounds across the globe.

The 2023 Recipient of the Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application was Dr. Swati Nayak, Scientist and South Asia Lead for Seed System and Product Management at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). She was recognized for her innovative approach to engaging smallholder farmers in demand-driven rice seed systems, from testing and deployment to equitable access and adoption of climate-resilient and nutritious rice varieties. Nayak promotes sustainable rural innovation and has pioneered participatory field research methods, inspiring many, especially women.
