CQU training helps Mick rebuild his future as a apprentice cabinetmaker - CQUniversity

By Greg Chapman

Mick Walton is building himself a new future as a cabinetmaker with Kitchen Design CQ thanks to his determination and CQUniversity's construction training.

The 50-year-old Rockhampton man was worked as a rigger in the entertainment industry before COVID-19 meant he had to change careers.

"COVID 19 meant there were no events so i had to leave my job as a rigger, I did a few months as a landscaper, then started as a trades assistant cabinetmaker with Kitchen Design CQ," he said.

"It just made sense to decide to do my mature age apprenticeship as I was going to be there anyway."

Now a little more than a year into his apprenticeship, Mick said he is enjoying his job and the training at CQU TAFE at the Rockhampton City Campus.

"The training is good. It's easy to understand and the CQU staff are very helpful," he said.

"(The training) has helped clarify some of the fundamentals of my job.

"I'd like to thank Kitchen Design CQ for allowing me to do my apprenticeship and I'd like to acknowledge Mark Gregory my instructor. He has a wealth of knowledge."

Mick encouraged anyone considering taking on an apprenticeship in construction or a career change to give it a go, especially with the current demand for construction workers.

"Do it! Get trained. You can take it and use it anywhere. The opportunities are endless," he said.
