City invites public to attend National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People Ceremony

In honour of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, also known as Red Dress Day, the City of Saint John, along with presenting partner Double Curve Media, are hosting a special one-hour ceremonythis Sunday.

The National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have faced disproportionate systemic violence in Canada and serves to honour all those who never made it home.

The ceremony will be led by Becca Ireland ,from the community of Neqotkuk in Wolastokwok. She is a mother of four, language warrior, and tree hugger. She currently works for Indigenous Women of the Wabanaki Territories, as the Wabanaki Lands and Language Coordinator. She completed the Wolastoqey Language Program through Saint Thomas University and the Child and Nature Alliance of Canada's Forest School Practitioner Course in 2023. She graduated from UNB with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management in 2021. Becca is certified as a full spectrum Indigenous doula and has over 10 years of experience working with children in an educational environment. She has received a wide range of cultural teachings from a variety of Elders and Knowledge Keepers and over the years has grown a relationship with plants and plant knowledge.
