Excellence in Advising, Student Success & Teaching Award Winners Honored

Southeast Missouri State University honored faculty and staff at the 2024 Excellence in Advising, Student Success, and Teaching Celebration on Tuesday, April 23.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ADVISOR AWARDS

One professional and one faculty advisor is chosen every year to be recognized as an Outstanding Academic Advisor. The award winners are then nominated for the National Academic Advising Association's (NACADA) Outstanding Advising Awards.

"Our Outstanding Academic Advisor award winners truly put their students' needs first," said Amanda Eller, director of Academic Advising. "Joanna Shaver and Dr. Samantha Siemers are two advisors who have a passion for helping their students find success."

Outstanding Professional Advisor - Joanna Shaver

Joanna Shaver has been with Southeast for more than 20 years and with the Office of Academic Advising for three years. She serves as an Academic Advisor II and advises students with the Harrison College of Business and Computing.

Outstanding Faculty Advisor - Dr. Samantha Siemers

Dr. Samantha Siemers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agriculture. She has 18 years of industry experience and 10 years of teaching experience. Dr. Siemers advises students in the Animal Science and Agricultural Communication programs.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The Awards for Teaching Excellence recognize Southeast faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional teaching and student success. Nominations and award winners span across nine categories and recognize faculty from a number of disciplines across campus.

"It is so valuable to take time at the end of an academic year and recognize the work of our faculty," said Provost Mike Godard. "This year's recipients are outstanding examples of how our faculty excel in every area of the teaching discipline."

Excellence in Teaching Innovation - Brooke Clubbs

The Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award goes to a faculty member who demonstrates a keen awareness of the needs of students. They showcase how their teaching practice or program design promotes flexible and innovative learning. Brooke Clubbs is an assistant professor in the Department of Leadership, Middle, and Secondary Education.

Excellence in Experiential Teaching - Eden Hildebrand

The Excellence in Experiential Teaching Award goes to a faculty member who employs several high-impact practices in their instruction and fosters growth in students through an increased ability to learn and apply the knowledge, skills, and concepts needed for success. Eden Hildebrand is an instructor in the Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance.

Excellence in Student Mentorship - Shawn Guiling

The Excellence in Student Mentorship Award is given to a faculty member who puts forth extraordinary efforts to increase student success through meaningful academic experiences. They provide support and advising beyond the scheduling of courses and participate in professional development as it relates to student success. Shawn Guiling is an assistant professor in the Department of Pyschology and Counseling.

Excellence in Supporting Undergraduate Research - Sajan Silwal

The Excellence in Supporting Undergraduate Research goes to a faculty member who instills an understanding and appreciation of research at the undergraduate level. They demonstrate that they have established a strong mentoring relationship with their undergraduate mentees and support and challenge them with engaging research in their disciplines. Sajan Silwal is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

Excellence in Supporting Graduate Research - Asa Wilson

The Excellence in Supporting Graduate Research goes to a faculty member who helps build and develop research skills and a passion for research in graduate education. They demonstrate excellence in supporting graduate research and establish strong mentorship relationships with students. Asa Wilson is an assistant professor in the Department of Management.

Excellence in the Assessment of Student Learning - Missy Nieveen-Phegley

The Excellence in the Assessment of Student Learning Award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates best practices by developing meaningful assessments that lead to student success and that inform teaching practices. Missy Nieveen-Phegley is a professor in the Department of English.

Excellence in Online Teaching - Yvonne Randolph

The Excellence in Online Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who champions online learning. They demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in online learning from the global perspective and the individual online course best practices. The winner also shows evidence of scholarship and research in the field. Yvonne Randolph is an instructor in the Department of Management.

Excellence in Student Recruitment - Jim Daughters

The Excellence in Student Recruitment goes to a faculty member who demonstrates extraordinary effort to attract and recruit students to apply for University admission or enroll at the University, exhibits ingenuity in devising novel methods and strategies to connect with prospective students or their families, is adept at developing innovative programming initiatives that result in heightened student enrollment, and demonstrates active involvement in various recruiting events and activities. Jim Daughters is an assistant professor in the Department of Music and Director of Bands.

OVC Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Student Success - Dr. Adam Criblez

The OVC Outstanding Faculty Award is given to a faculty member in each OVC member institution who has had an impact on students, who has contributed to the department, university, and curriculum development and has been involved in the community and with institutional service. Adam Criblez is a professor in the Department of History and Anthropology.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Award - Bridget Dixon

The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to a graduate student who demonstrates excellence in teaching. They are also currently enrolled and have had teaching responsibilities at Southeast for at least two semesters. Bridget Dixon is a graduate assistant with the Department of English.

SUPPORTNET AWARDS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS AND RETENTION INITIATIVES

SupportNET Recognition and Appreciation - Ivonne Goodin

The SupportNET Recognition and Appreciation Award recognizes a faculty or staff member for their excellent service to students and innovative contribution in the use of SupportNET. Ivonne Goodin is an administrative assistant in Testing Services.

SupportNET STAR - Alisha Youngblood Ortiz

The SupportNET STAR recognizes a faculty of staff member for notable advancement in the use of SupportNET for student success and retention. Alisha Youngblood Ortiz is a professor in the Department of Marketing.

SupportNET STARS - Learning Assistance Programs (LAP)

The SupportNET STARS recognizes a team, group, or department for notable advancement in the use of SupportNET for student success and retention. Learning Assistance programs is dedicated to creating an academic environment accessible for all students and incorporates the Center for Writing Excellence, Tutoring, and the Mathematics Learning Center
