Deutsche Telekom with exciting innovations at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

1.3.2024

  • - An AI-based smart phone automatically performs tedious tasks on demand.
  • - In the future, the router could be a practical robot or an eloquent hologram.
  • - The DT network is becoming the top protector of the devices connected to it.

Deutsche Telekom, as one of the leading telecommunications operators in the world, presented its advanced portfolio of technological innovations at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The novelties comprise highly technological communication solutions with the assistance of artificial intelligence, network protection and advanced services for live TV productions, thus confirming the engagement of the company in the sphere of innovations and technological development.

In line with the global technological trends, DT presented its innovations in the sphere of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI-based apps and services have been developed in order to improve and enhance the daily life of the customers. The visitors at MWC had an opportunity to experience the revolutionary concepts, such as "Magenta AI" - the DT solution for integrating AI in the devices and services for daily use.

Claudia Nemat, member of the Board responsible for Technology and Innovation at DT, pointed out: "Artificial intelligence is an inevitable part of our digital world and its continuous implementation is of essential significance for the development of the telecommunications industry. Our engagement in innovation is the driving force which not only enhances the lives of our customers, but it also shapes their future".

AI for as many people as possible - a new generation of smart phones

In that context, a concept was presented in Barcelona for a generation of smart phones based on artificial intelligence. These prototypes enable automatic completion of tasks and constitute a new manner of using telephone devices. In fact, this concept creates a new scenario for using smart phones with an in-built AI-based assistant which waits for voice input from its users, for example, for finding the bus to the airport, finding a connecting flight, booking a shuttle to the hotel and a room with a view of the sea. These days, for such tasks it takes patience, time and a series of apps or an internet browser.

DT, alongside its partners Qualcomm and Brain.ai, is working on the development of such devices, with two concepts in the pipeline involving different approaches in terms of the integration of AI in the devices. The T Phone evolution uses AI power from the cloud and it virtually outsources the energy-hungry computing operations. Qualcomm's approach favours short paths and, therefore, it integrates AI directly in the device. This saves the effort and transmission time of data transfers and it even works offline. Each solution has its individual strengths. The current test phase will show how these strengths play out in a wide variety of situations.

The router of the future

In addition, at this event, Deutsche Telekom presented its latest innovation - the router robot XXL, which has been designed to change the manner of using and managing the internet network at home. To that end, the company presented three design studies in Barcelona, the series of which is entitled "Concept T". From an avatar assistant in the form of a hologram to a router version in the form of a robot, the router of the future, packed with highly technological features and a multifunctional design which may even stand in as home décor, is something unprecedented. With its ability to identify the needs in the household and ensure comfort and security, the router robot XXL is a true pioneer in its class. It is sufficient for it to move around the home of the customer in order to see all the things that it can do. For example, thanks to its "green thumb", it will let you know if its sensor notices that the houseplants need watering.

Protection with "Magenta Security on Net"

Deutsche Telekom is steering its attention towards network security by presenting "Magenta Security on Net" - the new state-of-the-art product which constitutes a revolutionary solution for the protection of the user devices within the network. This innovative security service has been designed to ensure a high level of protection, solely from the Deutsche Telekom network, without any need for any additional software or complicated configurations. Starting from 2025, Deutsche Telekom will guarantee protection on each device with a SIM card in their network, including smart phones, vehicles, elevators and wind turbines.

Depending on industry and business customer requirements, this basic protection can be strengthened at multiple levels. This enables a seamless transition from the corporate network to Deutsche Telekom's mobile network without having to change individual standards and security guidelines. This innovation raises the company security to another technical level.

Ideal conditions for live TV productions

Furthermore, the company presented the new technologies and services for live TV production, enabling ultra fast and reliable broadcasts via the 5G network. In cooperation with its partner Sony, DT demonstrated its ability to enhance the video broadcasting, opening new opportunities for creativity and innovations in the sphere of media production.

Namely, by means of successful testing, these technological giants demonstrated the connection to Nevion's VideoIPath platform via these application programming interfaces (APIs). The CAMARA-standard network APIs offer optimized, low response times with stable bandwidth.

Nevion's VideoIPath platform orchestrates different media with each other and it is particularly dependent on real-time network quality. With the 5G technology which is flexible, widely available and more cost-effective, the video production companies are provided with the perfect solution for content transmission paths.

5G becomes independent

By means of successful tests and innovative approaches, Deutsche Telekom is continuing its efforts with a view to broadcasting events live. In the fall of 2023, the company announced the commercial launch of 5G live video production via a network slicing technology together with RTL. This innovation also requires technically advanced networks with an ecosystem which supports all 5G network features, while Deutsche Telekom's network has been technically ready for the functioning of a standalone 5G network since December 2021. Over several development stages, the day is approaching when the 5G network will be able to fully operate without 4G in the core network. All customers will be able to use it in the second half of 2024.

Small mast big time - mobile base station

This advanced mobile technology now has a significantly greater capacity. The new generation of ultra-mobile "mobile mast-to-go" base stations has become significantly larger and more flexible as compared to the prior versions as it can operate with additional frequencies. These innovative devices operate on different frequencies, including the 5G bandwidths, which means better coverage and quality of the mobile network. The executive functions of these base stations, alongside their efficiency and usability, make them irreplaceable in areas such as campus networks, networks in disaster afflicted regions and occasions such as large sports events.

With its engagement in the sphere of innovations, Deutsche Telekom continues to affirm its position as one of the main innovators in the telecommunications industry. With a strategic engagement aimed at continuous growth and progress, the company is moving beyond the limits of the current technologies and it is creating the future standard for digital communication and security.
