Proactive Policing Leads to Arrest of Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm

​VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Second precinct officers' proactive efforts and attentiveness led them to confiscate an illegally possessed firearm from a convicted felon.

On July 25, 2021 at approximately 1:30 a.m., second precinct officers on patrol at the oceanfront heard gunfire coming from the 1800 block of Pacific Avenue. Officers immediately began canvassing the area and located shell casings from spent ammunition near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 18th Street, additionally, information was obtained that directed officers to stop and speak with Daniel Bynum, in the 300 block of 18th Street. The preliminary investigation revealed that Bynum, a convicted felon, was involved in an exchange of gunfire with another individual.

27-year-old Daniel Dakota Bynum, of Newport News, Va., was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm in a public place, discharging a firearm within 1000 feet of a school and concealed possession of a firearm.

This case remains under active investigation and the identity of the second person involved is being sought.
