City's next Household Hazardous Waste collection day is April 13

The City of Yuma's Household Hazardous Waste collection day returns 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 13, at the City's Public Works facility, 1473 S. 2nd Ave.

Leftover household products that are flammable, corrosive, toxic or reactive and that are used in a home, vehicle, garden or lawn are considered household hazardous waste (HHW). The most common examples of these items are paint, batteries, light bulbs, pesticides, herbicides and cleaners. The City's drop-off events provide an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of these products for no additional fee.

"This type of waste requires special care to be properly disposed of," said Public Works Manager Jose Garcia. "Those items can cause problems even when buried in landfills, and should never be dumped in toilets, sinks or storm sewers."

The City has resumed holding drop-off events four times annually that are open to the residential public. No appointment is necessary.

To access the drop-off site, take 3rd Avenue to 1st Avenue, then south to 15th Street then west to 2nd Avenue, then north to the site entrance.

Once on site, a volunteer will ask the driver to describe the types of waste to be collected. Staff and volunteers will provide instructions for which station(s) will collect each of their items. Residents will then unload their items on designated tables. Please empty any bins and containers used to carry the waste as those left on tables will not be returned.

The following items will be accepted at the HHW collection event:

  • Motor oil.
  • Paint.
  • Antifreeze.
  • Household cleaners.
  • Solvents.
  • Pesticides.
  • Batteries.
