The situation in Ukraine – one of several issues discussed at the Plenary Meeting of COSAC

On 14-16 May, the Riksdag organised the Plenary Meeting of the LXIX COSAC. During the conference, members of the national parliaments' EU affairs committees and members of the European Parliament met to discuss current EU issues.

The Plenary Meeting of COSAC is the largest conference to be held within the framework of the Riksdag's part in the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union - the parliamentary dimension.

30 years of the single market

The Riksdag Committee on EU Affairs hosted the conference. The conference was led by Hans Wallmark (Moderate Party), Chair of the Committee on EU Affairs and Matilda Ernkrans (Social Democratic Party), Deputy Chair of the Committee on EU Affairs. The agenda included the priorities of the Swedish Presidency in the Council of the European Union, which were presented by Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall.

Another subject on the agenda was 30 years of the single market. Speakers in the debate included Othmar Karas, First Vice President of the European Parliament, and Kerstin Jorna, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

Other speakers included Anna Stellinger, Deputy Director General of International and EU Affairs, Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, and Therese Svanström, President of the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO).

Green transition and Ukraine

A further topic of discussion at the conference was the green transition. The invited speakers included Heléne Fritzon, Member of the ENVI Committee, European Parliament, Daniel Mes, Member of Cabinet of Commissioner Frans Timmermans, European Commission, and Johan Kuylenstierna, Director General of Formas.

In addition, the situation in Ukraine was dealt with. Speakers in this part-session included Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, Anders Ahnlid, Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Party on the use of frozen and immobilised assets to support Ukraine's reconstruction, and Jean-Erik de Zagon, Head of the European Investment Bank Representation to Ukraine.

The conference adopted contributions and conclusions, which are sent to the Presidents of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.

The Riksdag to arrange eight conferences during the EU Presidency

Sweden is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January-June 2023. Within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency, the Riksdag is arranging eight conferences during this period, in which members of the national parliaments of the EU member states and of the European Parliament participate and discuss various matters. The conferences are part of continuing cooperation between the parliaments, also known as interparliamentary cooperation in the EU.
