WesternU College of Dental Medicine becomes first axiUm-MiPACS dental school to partner with Overjet

Western University of Health Sciences' College of Dental Medicine (CDM) is partnering with Overjet, the world-leader in dental artificial intelligence, to bring its FDA-cleared AI platform to the College's patient care and clinical education programs. WesternU CDM is the first axiUm-MiPACS dental education institution in the U.S. to partner with Overjet.

CDM Dean Elizabeth Andrews, DDS, MS, (right), with Overjet Senior Clinical Manager Mina Ghorbanifarajzadeh, DMD, who visited WesternU on April 25, 2024 to provide Overjet training.

"This partnership will bring Overjet's powerful X-ray analysis and chart review tools to our curriculum and patient care operations. This will enhance the learning experience for our students by providing them with clear visualizations that will help them better understand structure and characteristics of the mouth, empowering them to communicate more confidently and effectively with their patients as they become practice ready," said CDM Dean Elizabeth Andrews, DDS, MS. "For our patients, this will further enhance the quality of care received at WesternU Health as our providers will be equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic tools available."

Overjet is the only AI technology cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to detect and precisely outline instances of oral disease - down to the millimeter. For students, the platform provides a rigorous and objective standard that quantifies pathologies in radiographs, using machine learning models trained on millions of cases.

"We're thrilled to join forces with WesternU to train the next generation of dentists," said Dr. Teresa Dolan, Chief Dental Officer at Overjet. "Over the last few years, our AI has transformed dental care for thousands of organizations, from small private practices to the largest dental groups in North America. By incorporating this technology into its curriculum, WesternU students will begin their careers with a massive head start - and be well prepared for the future."

Overjet has become an essential tool for clinicians, dental executives, insurers, and now students and educators as well. Trained professionals use Overjet to diagnose, recommend care, review claims, and efficiently run their businesses. Importantly, its AI serves to augment human judgment - not replace it - by providing precise information in real time.

"I am excited to explore the possibilities of using a clinical decision support tool like Overjet in oral health education. I think it holds potential to reshape our education and the future," said CDM Clinical Managing Partner for Dental Specialty Care and Associate Professor Clara Kim, DMD, MS. "It is important to investigate new innovations and use them to enhance our educational practices so students get exposure, they get experience under our guidance, and learn how to use a tool efficiently, responsibly and ethically."
