Korea and UNHCR mark contribution of 1 million dollars to support refugees, local communities in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, 14 May 2024: The Republic of Korea Tuesday marked the contribution of one million dollars, aimed at bolstering UNHCR's response in supporting Afghan refugees and their host communities in Pakistan.

This one-year project focuses on livelihoods assistance, prevention and response to gender-based violence, community-based protection and updating of critical identity documentation, benefitting more than 125,000 people across the country.

The announcement was made at a ceremony held at the National Vocational & Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), Centre of Excellence in Islamabad, where the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Pakistan, His Excellency Mr. Park Ki Jun, and UNHCR Representative, Ms. Philippa Candler signed an agreement. The Chairperson of NAVTTC, Ms. Gulmina Bilal, was also present for the occasion.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Park expressed his appreciation to the government of Pakistan and UNHCR for their collaborative efforts to support Afghan refugees. "The refugee issue is not the sole concern of any one country, but a global agenda that the international community must work together on in solidarity," he said.

UNHCR's Representative welcomed Korea's generous assistance, underscoring that the funding is already transforming lives, with 1,000 Afghans and Pakistani students enrolled in the NAVTTC training programmes this year, along with strengthened prevention and response to gender-based violence, children's protection, provision of legal aid and documentation.

Ms. Gulmina Bilal, the Chairperson of NAVTTC, highlighted the importance of the Republic of Korea's contribution and partnership with UNHCR to continuing providing youth skills development training and enhance their social and economic opportunities during the ceremony.

In closing the ceremony, Mursal, an Afghan refugee who participated in a NAVTTC training and is now a project coordinator, shared her views on the importance of empowering youth, including women. "When I first learned about this opportunity to participate in this programme, I saw it as a chance to accomplish my dreams," she noted. "Like many others, I seized this opportunity knowing that it held the key to a brighter future not only for myself but for my loved ones."

اسلام آباد، 14 مئی 2024: جمہوریہ کوریا نے منگل کے روزایک ملین ڈالر کا عطیہ دینے کا اعلان کیا ہے جس کا مقصد پاکستان میں افغان مہاجرین اور ان کی میزبان کمیونٹیوں کی امداد کے ذریعے UNHCR کے اقدام کو تقویت فراہم کرنا ہے۔

یہ ایک سالہ منصوبہ روز گار کی معاونت، صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد کی روک تھام اور جوابی اقدام، کمیونٹی کی بنیاد پر تحفظ اور شناخت کے اہم دستاویزات کو اپ ڈیٹ کرنے پرتوجہ دے رہا ہے جس سے ملک بھر کے 125,000 سے زائد افراد فائدہ اٹھا رہے ہیں۔

اس عطیہ کا اعلان نیشنل ووکیشنل اینڈ ٹیکنیکل ٹریننگ کمیشن (NAVTTC)، سنٹر آف ایکسی لینس اسلام آباد میں منعقدہ ایک تقریب میں کیا گیا جہاں پاکستان میں جمہوریہ کوریا کے سفیر محترم پارک کی جون اور UNHCR کی سربراہ محترمہ فلیپا کینڈلر نے ایک معاہدے پر دستخط کیے۔ NAVTTC کی چیئرپرسن محترمہ گلمینہ بلال بھی اس موقع پر موجود تھیں۔

اس تقریب سے خطاب کرتے ہوئےسفیر محترم پارک نے افغان مہاجرین کی میزبانی کرنے پر عوام اور حکومتِ پاکستان تعریف کی۔انھوں نے کہاکہ "پناہ گزینوں کا مسئلہ کسی ایک ملک کا مسئلہ نہیں ہے بلکہ یہ ایک عالمی ایجنڈاہے جسے بین الاقوامی برادری کو مل جل کریکجہتی کے ساتھ حل کرنا چاہیے۔"

UNHCR پاکستان کی سربراہ نے کوریا کی فراخدلانہ امداد کا خیرمقدم کیا اور اس بات پر زوردیا کہ یہ مالی معاونت پہلے ہی سے لوگوں کی زندگیوں کو بدل رہی ہے۔ اس سال NAVTTC کے تربیتی پروگراموں میں 1,000 افغان اور پاکستانی طلباء نے داخلہ لیا ہے۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد کی مضبوط روک تھام اور جوابی اقدام ، بچوں کا تحفظ، قانونی امداد کی فراہمی اور دستاویزات کی تیاری کو بھی یقینی بنایا گیا۔

چیئرپرسن NAVTTC محترمہ گلمینہ بلال نے اس تقریب میں نوجوانوں کو ہنر کے فروغ کی تربیت فراہم کرنے اور ان کے سماجی اور اقتصادی مواقع میں اضافہ کرنے کے سلسلے میں جمہوریہ کوریا کےمالی تعاون اور UNHCRکی شراکت کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کیا۔

اس تقریب کے اختتام پر NAVTTC کے تربیتی پروگرام میں شرکت کرنے والی اور موجودہ پراجیکٹ کوآرڈینیٹر مرسل نے خواتین سمیت نوجوانوں کو بااختیار بنانے کی اہمیت پر اپنے خیالات کا اظہار کیا۔انھوں نے بتایا کہ "جب مجھے پہلی بار اس پروگرام کے بارے میں علم ہوا تو میں نے اسے اپنے خوابوں کو پورا کرنےکا ایک سنہری موقع جانا ۔ دوسرے بہت سے لوگوں کی طرح میں نے بھی اس موقع سے فائدہ اٹھایا کیونکہ یہ نہ صرف میرے لیے بلکہ میرے عزیزوں کے لیے بھی روشن مستقبل کی ایک نوید ہے۔"
