ORU Nursing Students Exceed National/State Licensure Pass Rates

Tulsa, OK. April 8, 2023 - Oral Roberts University's (ORU) Anna Vaughn School of Nursing (AVSON) achieved a 95% passage rate for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). ORU's nursing students exceeded Oklahoma's pass rate of 87.48% and the national pass rate of 88.56%.

ORU Provost Kathaleen Reid-Martinez said, "We are extremely proud of our nursing students. This accomplishment reflects the dedication of the ORU nursing faculty and the diligence of their students-whose scores outperform at both the state and national levels."

To prepare for the licensure exam, students begin training during their first semesters at ORU, including preparation from the general education and nursing classes. In the last semester of their senior year, ORU students enroll in a nursing concept review course. This course provides an overview of concepts presented in AVSON's curriculum and enables computer-based testing to simulate the experience at the testing center.

"These pass rates are a testament to the dedication of our faculty to make sure students have a competent level of knowledge to sit for the NCLEX exam," said Dr. Audrey Thompson, Senior Professor of Nursing and Chair of the Undergraduate Department of AVSON. "Our faculty invests in our students. We believe this collaborative relationship allows students to fully engage in their learning."

ORU's educational framework is built upon the Theory of Nursing for the Whole Person. This theory educates nursing students to care for the whole individual, encompassing a patient's body, mind, and spirit. ORU students are also taught to work collaboratively with individuals, families, and communities to promote health and to care for themselves as nurses through self-awareness and openness to the direction of the Holy Spirit.

"We are very fortunate our nursing students are able to obtain clinical training in every major hospital system in our area," said Dean Prentice, Associate Professor of Health Sciences. "This diversity in clinical practice allows our students to experience the full spectrum of nursing opportunities for their future. These hospitals and non-hospital organizations actively recruit our students."
