NFB reports strong results in gender parity. Coming soon: a new self-declaration questionnaire to assess progress on its commitments to equity, diversity and inclusion.

March 8, 2023 - Montreal - National Film Board of Canada (NFB)

On International Women's Day, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is continuing to meet its gender-parity goals, both for the number of productions directed by women and for production budgets allocated to women-seven years after making its initial commitment.

The NFB has announced that 63% of all ongoing projects at the NFB (254) were directed by women or by teams with equal or greater representation of women than men. Notably, 66% of production spending was also allocated to productions led by women.*

The NFB met or surpassed goals for gender parity in two of four key creative functions, screenwriting (67%) and editing (70%), while women's participation was lower for cinematography (43%) and music composition (20%).

On April 1, 2023, the NFB will also implement a confidential and non-mandatory self-declaration questionnaire, which will be sent to filmmakers and production teams working on NFB projects. The questionnaire will enable the NFB to assess and publicly report on the progress of its commitments while keeping personal information confidential.

*Preliminary data as of February 23, 2023, for works in all phases of production during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.
