What’s Okay, What’s Not—and How to Take Care of Yourself Through It All

In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and TLU Pride Month-both of which fall in April-TLU will be collaborating with TAASA (Texas Association Against Sexual Assault) and the SAFE (Sexual Awareness For Everyone) student organization to present a special event on April 10, focusing on creating respectful, healthy relationships-and what to do when things get out of hand.

TAASA is a statewide coalition dedicated to eliminating sexual violence in Texas, and SAFE is a vital campus organization supporting LGBTQ+ students and allies. The SAFE organization also works to promote education on important issues, including LGBTQ+ rights, sexual and domestic violence, and mental health matters.

"Attending this event offers valuable education and skills applicable to various aspects of life, making it beneficial for anyone seeking to understand the crucial role consent plays in all relationships," says Director of Title IX and Equity Compliance Leslie Flores.

The featured speaker at the event, Crystal M. Garcia, will present a talk called Hooking Up, Hanging Out, and Healthy Situationships for Everyone. Garcia is the Training Coordinator at TAASA, and a solo mom living with complex PTSD. She has a long history of working with survivors of assault and is passionate about issues related to promoting awareness and prevention of campus sexual violence. She is the recipient of the 2013 TAASA Community Engagement Award and the 2016 NSVRC Visionary Voice Award.

Garcia's presentation will explore the dynamics of healthy relationships, specifically within university settings. Attendees will learn about consent, communication, and creating relationships which are respectful and mutually beneficial.

"We are excited to welcome Crystal Garcia because she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, in working with survivors and advocating for issues related to campus sexual violence," says Flores. "Her expertise, along with the resources and insights from TAASA, will provide valuable guidance and support for our community as we strive to create a safer and more inclusive campus environment."

The event is scheduled for April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium and is open to all TLU students, faculty, staff, and the community at large.
