Commemoration event in Vienna dedicated to the 109th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

24 April, 2024

On April 24, a commemoration event dedicated to the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide took place near the Franz Werfel monument in Vienna's Schiller Square.

The Patriarchal Delegate of the Armenian Apostolic Church for Central Europe and Scandinavia, Bishop Tiran Petrosyan, performed a commemoration ceremony for the canonized martyrs.

H.E. Armen Papikyan, Ambassador of Armenia to Austria, delivered a speech and expressed gratitude to the Austrian people and authorities for their recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. He emphasized that the absence of unequivocal condemnation of past crimes, coupled with an atmosphere of impunity and denial, creates fertile ground for new atrocities against humanity, which the civilized world once again witnessed in 2020-2023, when the entire Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh was subjected to ethnic cleansing.

Ambassador Papikyan emphasized the continuous efforts made by Armenia on international platforms to prevent new genocides and crimes against humanity, and to protect the rights of victims.

The event was attended by members of the Austrian public, political figures, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and the Austrian Armenian community.
