The Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) requires the State to review the IITAA standards every three years and, as appropriate, update the standards to reflect advances in information technology and accessibility techniques.

In November 2023, the IITAA Standards Workgroup recommended updating the IITAA standards as soon as the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) finalized a proposed rule on web and mobile accessibility under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

On April 24, 2024, the DOJ published its rule, which specified that states would need to meet the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, with an effective date of June 24, 2024.

Following suit, the State of Illinois published updated IITAA 2.1 Standards on April 24, 2024, with references to WCAG 2.0 updated to WCAG 2.1, and an effective date of June 24, 2024. Information technology developed, purchased, or provided by the State of Illinois after this date will need to conform with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
